Blepharitis is an infection of the eyelids and eyelash follicles and is due to bacteria called Staphylococcus or sometimes parasitic mites called Demodex. It is the commonest cause of red, scratchy, dry eyes and eye specialists see it all the time. You will not know what the cause of your red, scratchy, dry eyes is until you have been examined by an eye specialist or optometrist at a slit lamp (microscope).

There are many causes for red eyes. Some are less serious than others.

Quite a few associated symptoms need to be taken into account when looking to diagnose why someone has red eyes. If one's vision is decreased or there is sensitivity to light or a discharge coming out the eye, then an ophthalmologist needs to be consulted as soon as possible. There could be something serious such as uveitis or infective (viral or bacterial ) conjunctivitis present, or even an ulcer on the cornea and all these conditions need urgent medical treatment.

Causes and treatment methods:

Dark circles around the eyes are a universal problem. There are many causes cited for the development of dark circles and they can occur as a result of ageing or even in childhood.

Although there is a definite genetic predisposition to this condition, other causes can be related to allergies, for example, hay fever, sinusitis, fatigue and even certain medical conditions relating to the liver and kidney. Puffiness and swelling around the eye may also be due to oor circulation of de-oxygenated blood, resulting in a dark, bruised look.
